Nutrition Month 2026: Why Nutrition and Nature Go Together
What is Nutrition Month?
National Nutrition Month, led by the National Nutrition Council (NNC), is celebrated every July in the Philippines. It was launched to shine a spotlight on important food and health issues, like malnutrition, obesity, and micronutrient deficiencies (not getting enough essential vitamins and minerals).
The goal of this celebration is to raise public awareness of the importance of proper nutrition for the health and development of children and the entire Filipino community.
The Care Center Clinic, a PhilHealth YAKAP-accredited clinic, joins this annual celebration of health, wellness, and the simple joy of eating nutritious food.
National Nutrition Month 2026 Theme
Since 2024, Nutrition Month has carried the theme “Sa PPAN, Sama-Sama sa Nutrisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat.” It encourages everyone to work together to improve the nutrition and health of Filipinos. Each year, a special sub-theme is chosen to highlight a key focus area of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN).
The sub-theme for 2026, “Nutrisyon at Kalikasan, Ating Pangalagaan!” emphasizes the close link between nutrition and the environment. When we take care of our natural resources, we help ensure that everyone has access to safe, healthy, and nutritious food for present and future generations.
Climate Change Challenge
Deforestation, burning of fossil fuels, and unsustainable use of land are drivers of climate change. These activities cause global temperatures to rise, disrupting ecosystems, increasing sea levels, and making extreme weather events more frequent.
Severe weather events such as droughts, floods, and typhoons make it harder for farmers to grow crops and fishermen to catch fish. When the supply of food decreases, prices often go up, making it more difficult for many Filipino families to access and afford healthy and nutrient-rich food. According to World Vision International, this can contribute to the malnutrition problem in the country, particularly among vulnerable populations, including children, pregnant women, and low-income households.
Global food systems also affect the environment. Growing, processing, transporting, and consuming food all produce greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.
Excessive food waste and unsustainable farming methods are putting pressure on our land, water, and natural resources, harming the environment that supports food production.
How Can We Make a Difference?
The theme “Nutrisyon at Kalikasan, Ating Pangalagaan!” is a timely reminder that everyone has a role to play in protecting the environment and ensuring a stable supply of nutritious food.
- Families can help reduce food waste by planning meals and storing food properly.
- Filipino households are encouraged to buy and consume local, nutrient-rich meat and produce such as fish, rice, malunggay, squash, eggplant, and bananas.
- Grow fruits and vegetables in backyards, schools, and communities to help ensure a sustainable food supply.
Bottomline
The message of “Nutrisyon at Kalikasan, Ating Pangalagaan!” is simple: when we take care of the environment, we help ensure that healthy and nutritious food remains available and accessible for everyone.
Climate change can lead to severe weather events that affect our food supply. While we cannot reverse climate change overnight, we can mitigate its effects by protecting our natural resources, reducing food waste, and supporting local food production.
As we celebrate Nutrition Month 2026, it’s time to take a proactive step toward better health. Visit the Care Center Clinic and consult with nutritionist-dietitians in the Philippines who can help you and your family support healthy eating, make positive lifestyle changes, and manage illness.
