World Handwashing Day 2025: Why Clean Hands Mean Better Health for Filipinos
Every October 15, we observe World Handwashing Day, a reminder that washing our hands is one of the simplest, most cost-effective, and yet most powerful habits that can protect our lives. It sounds basic, but washing our hands with soap and water is an effective way to prevent diseases and promote good health.
Why is Hand Hygiene Important?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes that washing with soap and water can reduce diarrhea-related diseases by around 30% and respiratory infections by around 20%. These common health conditions are often treated with antibiotics, even when they aren’t needed. Over time, this can contribute to antibiotic resistance, making some medicines less effective in fighting serious infections. Washing our hands regularly with soap and water can lessen the use of antibiotics, ensuring that these medicines remain effective when truly necessary.
Good hand hygiene also protects us from catching germs that are already resistant to antibiotics and that can be harder, longer, and more expensive to treat. In short, when we wash our hands regularly, we are not just keeping ourselves healthy–we’re also protecting the world’s ability to fight diseases.
A Lesson Learned From the Pandemic
If there’s one thing that the COVID-19 pandemic taught us, it’s this: washing our hands frequently can save lives. During those challenging years, Filipinos became extra mindful of hand hygiene. People washed their hands more often — at home, in schools, and in workplaces — whenever soap and water were available. And when they weren’t, almost everyone carried their own alcohol or hand sanitizer wherever they went.
Now that life has returned to normal, many Filipinos have become more relaxed, believing that the immediate threat has passed. But the truth is, germs never take a break.
Germs are everywhere — on the things we touch, the food we eat, and even the air we breathe. The most common way they spread is through our hands. Without realizing it, we transfer bacteria and viruses from one surface to another.
That’s why we should never forget the lesson the pandemic taught us: maintaining good hand hygiene should remain a daily practice that keeps us and our loved ones healthy.
How to Wash Hands Properly
The CDC recommends these five simple steps:
- Wet hands completely using clean, running water.
- Turn off the faucet. Apply soap and rub your hands together to create a rich lather.
- Scrub thoroughly for at least 20 seconds—include palms, backs of hands, between fingers, and under nails.
- Rinse well under running water until all the soap is gone and your hands feel clean.
- Use a clean towel or an air dryer to completely dry your hands.
Handwashing protects everyone, especially vulnerable groups—children, seniors, and those with weak immune systems.
If you’re teaching kids, tell them to sing “Happy Birthday” twice while washing—it’s a fun and easy way to time the 20 seconds. Handwashing can become a lifelong healthy habit when practiced and reinforced from a young age, helping kids grow up mindful of their hygiene and health.
When to Wash Your Hands
Make it a habit to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and clean water during these key times:
- Before, during, and after cooking or preparing food to avoid contaminating meals with harmful bacteria.
- Before and after eating, especially if you’re sharing food with others.
- Before and after caring for someone who is sick, particularly if the person has symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea.
- Before and after treating wounds or cuts to prevent infection.
- After using the toilet or helping a child who has just gone to the bathroom.
- After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.
- After touching pets, handling pet food, or cleaning up animal waste.
- After handling trash.
